Four Fundamental Rules of Firearm Safety:

The four fundamental rules of firearm safety, as recognized by organizations like the NSSF and NRA, are: treat all guns as loaded, keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot, and be sure of your target and what is beyond it.

  1. Treat All Guns as Though They Are Loaded
    • Never assume a firearm is unloaded, even if you have checked it yourself previously.
    • Always verify for yourself that a gun is unloaded before handling it, ensuring the action is open.
  1. Always Keep the Firearm Pointed in a Safe Direction
    • Never point a firearm at anything you are not willing to destroy.
    • A “safe direction” means the gun is pointed so that even if it discharges, it will not cause injury or significant property damage.
  1. Keep Your Finger Off the Trigger Until Ready to Shoot
    • Keep your trigger finger straight and outside the trigger guard until your sights are on the target and you have made the decision to fire.
    • This prevents accidental discharges caused by sudden movements or loss of balance.
  1. Be Sure of Your Target and What Is Beyond It
    • Positively identify your target before shooting.
    • Bullets can pass through targets, so ensure you have a safe backstop and know what lies behind or beyond your target.

Additional Safety Guidelines for Firearms:

    • Never mix alcohol/drugs with shooting: Do not consume alcohol or drugs before or during handling firearms.
    • Use proper safety equipment: Always wear eye and ear protection.
    • Store firearms safely: Store guns unloaded and locked, with ammunition stored separately.
    • Maintain control: Never cross a fence, stream, or log with a loaded firearm.
